DC-6 IN SOUTH
AFRICA
By Leon Steyn, October
2010
Although the DC-6 variants were common
visitors to Palmietfontein Airport and to Jan Smuts Airport in
the early post war years, they were being operated by KLM, PAA, SAS,
Sabena, British Caledonian, Alitalia and others. South African Airways did
not operate the DC-6 and opted for the Douglas DC-4 and Douglas
DC-7B.
The only South African DC-6
operators were Avia Air Charter of Wonderboom which briefly operated two
from Wonderboom Airport and Interocean Airways which operated from Lanseria
Airport.
West Air Aviation and Namibian Commercial Aviation
utilised DC-6s during the 1990s. Many more DC-6s, not on the South African
register frequented local airfields such as Rand Airport and Lanseria
Airport for maintenance. Many of these ended up in South
Africa.
